BACKGROUND


Year 1918 is an historical year of the World, as the World War-I which started in 1914 ended.This year was a critical year for the Christian families of the churches in the erstwhile South Canara Dist. which was founded by the Basel Missionaries as in the year 1918 after the First World War, the British Government decided to prohibit the Basel Mission from continuing the work in India. British Government then considered the Basel Mission as a German and therefore as an alien mission though its registered office was in Switzerland, its president as well as most of the members of its Board, were Swiss citizens.As a result the Missionaries went back to their hometowns. As they were the backbone of the Churches and Christian families in socio-economic development, on their return and help that has been extended by them to the Churches and Christian families were stopped. As the socio-economic status of the families was very poor, they had to find out alternative solutions for their needs. At this stage local well-wishers who were in favour of socio-economic development of the society were of the view that the Co-operative Movement (SahakaraChalavali) that has been motivated by the government could help our people to some extent. Most of the Christian members in this area are either employed on daily wages at the local Tile/Iron/Hosiery and other factories or as evangelists/teachers/clerks. Rich/Landowners/business people are numbered. As this was the condition, if they wish to take up a self- employment, petty business or constructing a house on their own was a dream. Though economically not sound, many of our people were having the treasurer of good knowledge, ideas and trustable quality. Likeminded peoples’ idea of encashing these qualities of our people resulted in motivating formation of an organisation of societal nature.


ESTABLISHMENT


In the year 1917, on 26th August, 19 likeminded members under the leadership of Sri J. P. Karat had a meeting and after prolonged discussion decided to establish a society for the welfare of Protestant Christians. They have worked out required memorandum and bye-laws which is required for registration of the society. The same was sent to Asst. Registrar of Cooperative Societies at Kozhikode (former Calicut) for registration. It was facilitated by Sri M. R. Giriappa, the then Inspector of Cooperatives at Mangalore. The Protestant Christian Co-operative Society, Balmatta was registered on 18-4-1918 by the then Asst. Registrar at Kozhikode, Sri P.K. Kunzhi Menon. The Society was started functioning on 22nd May 1918.

Following were the Board of Directors for the first time:

(3) Sri Fredrick Jathanna

(4) Sri Ebenezer Pearl

(5) Sri S. E. Aiman

(6) Sri C. H. Gojar

Their services are memorable in establishing, uplifting the Society at its infant stage to a great extent.

Vision & Mission

The motto of the Society is ‘Joining hands to serve’ and accordingly following symbol has been adopted:
Vision of the Society is to join hands to uplift all the Protestant Christians in Mangalore in sharing and caring.

Following are mission to implement the Mission with added facilities in the recent past:


Keep open share-holding for all the Protestant Christians

Uplifting of Socio-economic status of Protestant Christians

Motivation for saving of money for future.

Loan facilities for domestic needs

Loan facilities for Home for the Homeless(people living in rented houses to have their own houses)

Loan facilities for possessing vehicles

Supporting.

The Society is also extending assistance for the following from its “common good fund” and Members Welfare Fund:

(a) Assistance for Christian Schools for Books and Uniforms

(b) Medical assistance to economically backward members

(c) Award of Consolation Prizes to the children of ‘A’ class members, those secured highest marks in SSLC, II PUC exams.

LIMITATIONS


  • Presently the coverage area is limited to Mangalore Taluk.
  • Now the banking & availing facilities of the Society is open to the Public with the limitations of A, B, C, D classes of membership.

    ಪ್ರೊಟೆಸ್ಟೆಂಟ್ ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಸಹಕಾರ ಸಂಘ ನಿಯಮಿತ - ಕಿರುಚರಿತ್ರೆ:


    1918ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲನೇ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಯುದ್ಧ ಕೊನೆಗೊಂಡ ನಂತರ ಜರ್ಮನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವಿಸ್ ಮಿಶನರಿಗಳು ತಾಯ್ನಾಡಿಗೆ ಮರಳಬೇಕಾಗಿ ಬಂದುದರಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ್ದ ಅನೇಕ ಸಂಘಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಜನರ ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಪ್ರಯೋಜಾನಾರ್ಥ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಮುಚ್ಚಲ್ಪಟ್ಟವು. ಇವರು ಈ ಸಂಘ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಸಭೆಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಸಭಾಸದಸ್ಯರ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಬೆನ್ನೆಲುಬಾಗಿದುದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವರು ಹಿಂದೆ ಹೋದುದರಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನರು ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಮುಗ್ಗಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಬೇಕಾಯಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಇದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಬೇರೆದಾರಿ ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪ್ರಸಂಗ ಒದಗಿ ಬಂತು. ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಹಿತೈಷಿಗಳು ಆಗ ಸರಕಾರ ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದ "ಸಹಕಾರ ಚಳುವಳಿ" ನಮ್ಮ ಜನರ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ-ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಸಹಕಾರಿ ಯಾಗಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಆಲೋಚಿಸಿದರು. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಸದಸ್ಯರು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಹೆಂಚು/ಕಬ್ಬಿಣ/ನೇಯ್ಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದಿನಗೂಲಿ ನೌಕರರಾಗಿದ್ದವರು, ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಇವ್ಯಾಂಜಲಿಸ್ಥರಾಗಿ, ಟೀಚರುಗಳಾಗಿ, ಗುಮಾಸ್ತರಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದು ಬೆರಳೆಣಿಕೆಯ ಕೆಲವು ಜನ ಮಧ್ಯಮ ವರ್ಗ, ಭೂಹಿಡುವಳಿದಾರರು, ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ವಹಿವಾಟು ನಡೆಸುವವರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಇಂತ ಹ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಸುಧಾರಣೆಗಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ವ್ಯವಹಾರ, ಸ್ವೋದ್ಯೋಗ ವಾಸಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಮನೆ ಹೊಂದಬೇಕೆಂಬುದು ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಕನಸಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಆರ್ಥಿಕವಾಗಿ ಅಷ್ಟೇನು ಸುಸ್ತಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರದಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅನೇಕರು ತಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಒಳ್ಳೇ ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಆಲೋಚನೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಂಬಿಕೆಗೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯ ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಇಂತ ಹ ಒಂದು ಸಹಕಾರ ಮನೋಭಾವನೆಯ ಒಂದು ಸಂಘಟನೆಯನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣಕರ್ತರಾದರು. 1917ರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ 26ರಂದು 19 ಸಹಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಸದಸ್ಯರು ಶ್ರೀಯುತ ಜೆ.ಪಿ. ಕಾರೆಟ್ ಇವರ ಸಭೆಯಾಗಿ ಸೇರಿ ದೀರ್ಘ ಸಮಾಲೋಚನೆಯ ಬಳಿಕ ಪ್ರೊಟೆಸ್ಟೆಂಟ್ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತರ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ಸಂಘವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಪ್ರೊಟೆಸ್ಟೆಂಟ್ ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಸಹಕಾರ ಸಂಘ, ಬಲ್ಮಟ ಇದು ದಿನಾಂಕ 14.4.1918ರಂದು ನೊಂದಾವಣೆಗೊಂಡಿತು. ಸಂಘವು 22 ಮೇ 1918ರಂದು ಕಾರ್ಯಾರಂಭ ಮಾಡಿತು. ಸ್ಥಾಪಿತ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ 31 ಮಂದಿ ಸದಸ್ಯರ ರೂ.115 ಪಾಲು ಬಂಡವಾಳದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆರಂಭಗೊಂಡು ಸದ್ರಿ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಸದಸ್ಯರಿಗೆ ರೂ.೪೬ನ್ನು ಸಾಲರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಸಂಘದ ಧ್ಯೇಯ ವಾಕ್ಯ 'ಸೇವೆಗಾಗಿ ಕೈ ಜೋಡಿಸು (Joining hands to serve)' ದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರೊಟೆಸ್ಟೆಂಟ್ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತರ ಪಾಲುದಾರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ - ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ, ಹಣ ಉಳಿತಾಯ , ಅಗತ್ಯತೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಾಲಸೌಲಭ್ಯ ಹೀಗೆ ವಿವಿಧ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಈ ಸಂಘವು ಜನಮನ್ನಣೆ ಗಳಿಸಿತು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಹೊಂದಿತು. ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಈ ಸಂಘದ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿ ಮಂಗಳೂರು ತಾಲೂಕಿಗೆ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕರಿಗೂ ಸದಸ್ಯತ್ವ ಎ, ಬಿ, ಸಿ ಮತ್ತು ಡಿ ವಿಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸವಲತ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.
